“They’re Behind You”!

Sheepdog with lambs – but Mo doesn’t realise the lambs are behind her! Shearing time. And two years ago today we were helping Ian and Ruth Morris to gather sheep at Middle Hill Farm in Shropshire. I spotted Mo looking very pleased with herself, not realising that two missed lambs were standing immediately behind her! It didn’t really matter that the lambs were outside the… Read more.
Kay – always there, giving her best

Much of the success we’ve enjoyed in sheepdog training is owed to Kay almost, but not quite, a retired sheepdog. Kay, our semi-retired sheepdog, has taught us so much over the years. She always knows what needs to be done. Kay’s quite an elderly dog now, and partially deaf, but she’s still a very useful working dog. Typical of a sheepdog, Kay may be slowing… Read more.
Training my first dog, Dot

This is Dot, the herding dog that changed my life! Dot features in our Sheepdog Training Article (written in 2003). We had a lot of fun with Dot. In the early stages of her training I very nearly returned Dot to her breeder because I didn’t understand her. She wasn’t doing the things I’d expected trainee dogs to do; the things that happened in the… Read more.
Cooling off in the pond on a hot day!

Puppy Faye and the dogs don’t like it too hot Three years ago today, the weather was unexpectedly hot – just as it is in the UK today. Unlike today though, we’d just had a spell of really heavy rain, and our (normally dried up) pond had some water in it for a change, so the dogs wasted no time in enjoying it to the… Read more.
It’s our bed so we’ll sleep in it!

Dog beds are for sleeping in – whichever way up they happen to be! A curious bed for puppies, perhaps, but these pups weren’t put off by their bed being propped against the wall to dry. They just climbed in and went to sleep as though nothing had changed. Go to the original blog and photos. Read more.
Meet the Sheepdogs (from May 2012)

Some of our working sheepdogs at rest We thought you’d like to see this picture of some of the dogs taking a break from playing. The picture was taken on this day five years ago (20th May 2012). From left to right, we have Ezra, then Rita in the background. Next is Dulcie, and immediately behind her, I can see Mab’s face. There is another… Read more.
Puppy Mew at sixteen weeks

Four months old and full of life, Mew’s a real character Some very welcome sunshine this morning prompted me to take the camera out with me when I took the dogs for their twice-daily run. I noticed that Mew’s still eager to get into whatever picture I’m taking, while her close friend Maddie (from Kay and Oliver) is more camera-shy. Mew and Maddie’s characters are… Read more.
Did someone say GO?

Sheepdogs enjoy play time just as much as pet or companion dogs Can you allow your sheepdog to play? Yes! Whatever the weather, the dogs always seem to make the most of things. Your collie is needed to work sheep or cattle, but it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have fun. Enjoy some time off with your dog, because no one can work all the time.… Read more.
Bronwen excels under pressure at Dean Farm

The day was wet and extremely muddy, but Kay and Bronwen had the work done in style Today was busy with sheep gathering. First, a bunch of ewes needed to be moved along the lane to a new field and to join another flock. Then all the sheep were put through the race for ultrasound scanning (to see how many lambs they’re expecting). Choosing the… Read more.
