Correctly used, a training stick will HALVE the time it takes to train your dog!
Suitable stock, such as sheep or cattle, and a suitably-sized training area are essential for training a herding dog. However, there’s something else that will make your training easier and much quicker – the training stick. Many handlers will immediately think of a shepherd’s crook, but they can be heavy and tiring to hold for an entire training session.
Cheap, and lightweight
We use, and recommend, a piece of lightweight plastic pipe. It costs next to nothing, but used correctly and with good timing, this simple training stick is invaluable for guiding or blocking the dog. You can even use it to encourage the dog to stay back off the stock.

Training outside the ring?
In the open field the training stick continues to be effective, even when the dog is over fifty metres from the handler. The training stick is so effective that it can control the dog around stock in an open field without any verbal commands from the trainer. You can reserve your voice to encourage the dog to come forward, or for rewarding your dog for good work.
