A three-part tutorial to teach YOU how to teach your sheepdog to drive sheep.
The Driving tutorials are among our most popular videos, tackling a subject that many handlers – and dogs – find challenging. Some sheepdog trainers dread teaching their dog to drive, but if you take the time to understand what’s happening there’s really no need to worry.
You can teach your sheepdog to drive
In Driving Part 1 you’ll discover how to ease the dog into driving. When you begin to teach your dog to drive it will possibly be very confused. Asking the dog to drive the stock away is the exact opposite of everything we’ve been teaching up till now! So our aim is to reduce the stress involved for the dog.
Driving Part 2 demonstrates how to use your body position to maintain some control over the dog (and, hence, the sheep). Body position is especially useful in the early stages of teaching your sheepdog to drive. In this second driving tutorial, Andy shows that putting himself in the right place, at the right time, can make a huge difference to the behaviour of the dog.
What problems can you expect when you teach your sheepdog to drive?
The most common problem is one that all handlers experience – you have less control over the dog when it works at a distance from you. In Part 3 we see an error that’s very typical of a young trainee dog. Our dog is anxious to get ahead of the sheep and bring them back to the handler, despite our best efforts. Luckily we’ve already taught a command to help with that…but which? Use the commands you have available. Andy demonstrates how using what might seem an inappropriate command can bring the dog back onto line.
