In Part One of our Sheepdog Training Ring tutorial we demonstrate the invaluable training ring. The ring can be invaluable when starting a young dog or puppy, especially if you’ve no experienced dog to help you. The training ring keeps the action within easy reach, and allows you to control or support the youngster as needed. In time, of course, you’ll be able to train your dog in the open field, but don’t be in a hurry to dismantle that ring!
Find out why in Part Two.

Part Two of the training ring tutorial shows you how to modify your existing ring. You can use the ring to teach your dog more advanced techniques, such as penning and driving. Moving a few hurdles, or adding more, can transform the training area and allow you to do so much more.
Looking further ahead, even the most skilled sheep dog will learn to cut corners. It might be in small things, such as not flanking or stopping so well as it used to. If you feel that your dog’s work has deteriorated in some way then the ring is ideal for a “back to basics” refresher course.
You’ll find a chapter about the Sheepdog Training Ring, and more, in our Training Tutorial collections. Watch the video below for full details.
