In Part One of our Training Ring tutorial we demonstrate how the ring can be invaluable when starting a young dog or puppy, especially when there’s no experienced dog to lend a hand; the ring keeps the action within easy reach, and allows us to control or support the youngster, as needed. In time, of course, you’ll be able to train your dog in the open field, but don’t be in a hurry to dismantle that ring!
Part Two of the tutorial shows you how to modify and use the ring to teach your dog more advanced techniques, such as penning and driving. Just moving or adding a few more hurdles will transform the training area, and you can do so much more.
Looking further ahead, even the most skilled sheep dog can learn to cut corners. If you find that your dog’s work has deteriorated in some way – perhaps not flanking or stopping so well as it used to – then the ring is ideal for a “back to basics” refresher course.
