It’s not difficult to train your dog to toilet on command; it’s essential if your dog stops while it’s working.
A dog that stops to relieve itself while it’s supposed to be working, is not working efficiently. When the dog stops it can’t maintain control of its sheep or cattle. If it doesn’t stop it’s likely to be distracted.

In this sheepdog training tutorial you’ll see just how easy it is to train your dog to toilet before it begins work. Usually this will eliminate the embarrassment and inconvenience of an interruption to the proceedings while the dog answers the call of nature. A nuisance when you’re working at home, but imagine it happening at a sheepdog trial!
Particularly during training, some dogs will use toileting as a distraction.

Not just for working dogs!
Aside from improving the dog’s work, there are many other times when it’s very useful to be able to instruct the dog to toilet on command. It’s especially useful before starting a long journey, or if it’s more convenient in one place than another. This is also true of pet and companion dogs, of course.
Young Archie keeps his pen very clean indeed, and when we take him to sheep, he’s so excited he forgets to make himself comfortable. Eventually though, nature must take its course, so he has to stop for relief. We’ve trained him to take a “comfort break” before the training session begins.
